Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) can be challenging to treat, especially when it co-occurs with borderline personality disorder (BPD) symptoms. Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) has shown promise in treating these complex cases. This study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of PTSD-specific DBT treatments. A thorough review of existing research on DBT interventions for PTSD was conducted. Thirteen relevant studies involving 663 participants were analyzed. They key findings were that
PTSD-specific DBT treatments demonstrated moderate effectiveness in reducing PTSD symptom severity.
These treatments also showed positive effects in decreasing depression, dissociative symptoms, BPD-associated symptoms, and non-suicidal self-injury (NSSI) frequency.
In conclusion, DBT approaches such as DBT-PTSD and DBT Prolonged Exposure (PE) can be beneficial in alleviating PTSD symptoms and associated conditions like depression. Future studies should explore treatments targeting NSSI, BPD symptoms, and suicidality. See full article here
